A letter from
Shanna, my Earth-saving girlfriend:
Growth from BRAC worth being considered
The Aegis, June 13, 2008
Dear Editor,
Let's protect Maryland's natural heritage.
As a resident of Harford County, I am deeply concerned about the impact of
BRAC on Maryland's natural heritage. I cherish our beautiful open spaces,
wliderness and family farms, so when I learned that Maryland's Smart Growth
Law hasn't been updated from 10 years, I became very nervous about how the
influx in our population will affect land development. Maryland's population
is expected to increase by 17 percent over the next 20 years.
I am not opposed to development, but I believe it is important to develop in
a way that is sustainable and protects our natural heritage.
I urge people concerned about this issue to pressure Governor Martin
O'Malley to introduce legislation next session that would modernize our
Smart Growth Law. It's important for everyone who cares about this issue to
get invovled so that county governments are required to comply with local
government plans, rather than making exceptions for the development
industry.
Shanna
